Stoughton, MA: The Closest Town on the List
Stoughton is the closest town to the Canton gym on the whole list: 3.5 miles from Town Hall, about seven minutes on a clear road. Nobody in Stoughton can honestly say the drive is the problem.
Three and a half miles
From Stoughton Town Hall at 10 Pearl Street it is 3.5 miles and roughly 7 minutes to Canton, out Porter Street and down Washington Street to Route 138. From Stoughton High School on Pearl Street it is the same distance, 3.5 miles, and about 7 minutes. Raynham is 17.2 miles and around 23 minutes if you want the bigger room. Those are clear-road figures from OpenStreetMap routing, Porter Street to Washington Street is the whole route, and Route 138 is the road the gym sits off. and the honest version at 5 PM is 10 to 12 minutes, which is still a Stoughton errand rather than a trip.
This is the town where the argument changes. In most places on this list the page has to convince you the drive is fine. Here the question is whether you will use a gym that is closer than the supermarket.
The busiest recreation calendar around
Stoughton Parks and Recreation runs youth programs from pre-K up: soccer in spring and fall, flag football in spring and fall, basketball in winter, dance in every season, a football camp and golf and pickleball in summer, plus softball, T-ball, tennis and a track club. That is a full calendar for a kid, and it is the reason a Stoughton family has to be deliberate about what gets added.
Registration runs online the way most towns do it now, and the fall and winter guides are the two a Stoughton parent actually reads. Jiu-jitsu is a reasonable addition because it is one fixed slot a week and it does not collide with a season. It also does not need a team to show up. If your kid plays three sports, this is the one that runs in the gaps.
Kids, three bands, one trip
Kids train Monday through Thursday in age bands: Tiny Ninjas (3 to 5) at 5 PM, Vipers (6 to 9) at 5:30, Cobras (10 to 13) at 6:15. The times stack, so a family with a six-year-old and an eleven-year-old does one drop-off and one pickup.
The bands are by age rather than size or experience. A big eight-year-old and a small eight-year-old start in the same place, and neither is thrown in with fourteen-year-olds.
Town hall and the high school are both on Pearl Street, a few minutes apart, which tells you how compact the centre of Stoughton is. The gym is the next town over, on the same road the drive starts on.
What Canton runs for adults
- Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Tuesday and Thursday, 6 PM.
- No-Gi Grappling: Monday and Wednesday, 7 PM, and Saturday, 11 AM.
- Kickboxing: Monday and Wednesday, 6 PM, and Tuesday and Thursday, 7 PM.
- Open mat: Saturday, 12 PM.
Four adult slots on weeknights plus Saturday morning is a schedule that fits a Stoughton week, because the drive is seven minutes and a missed class costs you almost nothing. That is the underrated part of living close: you can go on a night you are tired, because getting there is not an event.
When you want more room
Raynham is 23 minutes and carries the bigger schedule: jiu-jitsu at 11 AM and 6 or 7 PM on weekdays plus Saturday and Sunday at 10 AM, no-gi at 10 AM most mornings and 6 AM three days a week, kickboxing Tuesday and Thursday at 11 and Friday at 5, women’s jiu-jitsu Sunday at 9, marathon classes Thursday and Friday nights, and open mat Sunday at 8 and 11. One membership covers both, so the answer can change with your shift.
Starting from zero
Most people who walk in have never trained anything. They are not flexible, they are not in shape for this, and they are nervous about the first five minutes. The intro appointment exists for exactly that: you see the room, you meet whoever is teaching, and you get on the mat with a coach before a class is watching. By the time you take a real class you have already been in the building twice.
Your first class
The intro costs nothing and takes about 15 minutes: you see the room, hear how membership works, talk about what you want, and get a short lesson on the mat. Shorts and a T-shirt are all you need.
How to start from Stoughton
The form on this page asks for three things: program, gym, phone number. Someone calls you back. Canton 781-499-8302, Raynham 508-219-0418.
Route 138 is the spine of the whole thing. It runs from Stoughton through Canton, and the gym sits off it, which is why the drive is short and why the directions are one road and a turn.
Seven minutes. If you have been meaning to try this for a year, the drive was never the reason you did not.
