Randolph, MA: Twelve Minutes From the Mat
Randolph is six and a half miles from the Canton gym, which makes it the closest thing this side of the map has to a neighborhood gym. It is also a town that takes its own recreation seriously enough to run a pool, a challenge course, a farmers market and a dog park out of one department.
Twelve minutes, mostly on side streets
From Randolph Town Hall at 41 South Main Street it is 6.7 miles and about 13 minutes to Canton, up Main Street, across through the Mazzeo Drive stretch and onto Route 138. No highway, no merge, no reason to talk yourself out of it on a Tuesday. Raynham is 20.7 miles and roughly 27 minutes, which is the fallback if your week already has you down Route 24. From Randolph High School the Canton figure is 6.5 miles and 13 minutes, so the school side of town does not change the answer.
Those are clear-road numbers from OpenStreetMap routing. Route 138 through Stoughton at 5 PM is slower than that, and anybody who drives it knows exactly where.
A town that builds its own programming
Randolph Community Programs runs out of the Intergenerational Community Center on Pleasant Street, and the list is longer than most towns bother with: a community pool, the Cochato Challenge Course, a dog park, a farmers market, and parks, ponds and trails. There is a gymnasium schedule and a program calendar, and the department registers people online like a small parks department should, which is not universal in a town this size.
A fixed weekly class is one more line on a calendar that already has lines on it, which is easier to hold than the first line on an empty one. Jiu-jitsu fits that habit better than most: it is a fixed weekly slot, it runs all year, and it does not get cancelled for weather.
Wrestling at Randolph High
Randolph High School fields a wrestling team, with a season schedule on the school’s athletics site. For a Randolph kid who has wrestled, this is the off-season room. Same grips, same balance, more mat time, no weight cut, and a coach who is not rotating fifteen kids through one drill.
The kids’ classes are split by age rather than by size or experience: Tiny Ninjas for 3 to 5, Vipers for 6 to 9, Cobras for 10 to 13. A seven-year-old with a wrestling season behind them and a seven-year-old who has never been on a mat start in the same place, which is the point of the age bands.
The train on the town line
The Holbrook/Randolph commuter rail station sits at Union and Center Street on the Randolph side, which means a chunk of the town commutes north by train rather than by car. If that is your week, the 6 and 7 PM classes at Canton are built for you, and the Saturday open mat at noon is the one that does not care what time your train was.
What the Canton room runs
The Canton week, in list form:
- Jiu-jitsu: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6 PM.
- Grappling, the no-gi class: Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 PM, plus Saturday at 11 AM.
- Kickboxing: Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 PM, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 PM.
- Open mat: Saturday, noon.
That is a compact schedule and it is worth being honest about it: Canton is a smaller room than Raynham, so the menu is shorter and the classes are less crowded. If you want a class at 11 in the morning or a competition team session, Raynham has those and it is 27 minutes away. If you want to train three times a week after work, Canton covers it.
Kids at Canton
Kids go Monday through Thursday in three age bands: 5 PM for Tiny Ninjas (3 to 5), 5:30 for Vipers (6 to 9), 6:15 for Cobras (10 to 13). One parent, one trip, three start times that stack.
What a Randolph week looks like
Two weeknights and a Saturday is the shape most people land on. Tuesday and Thursday jiu-jitsu at 6 PM is the default pair. Monday and Wednesday grappling at 7 PM is the pair for people who prefer no-gi or who cannot make 6. Saturday open mat at noon is the one that survives a bad week, and it is also the cheapest way to find out whether you like the room before you commit to anything.
If you are weighing Canton against Raynham, the honest test is a Wednesday in February. Canton is 13 minutes. Raynham is 27. Most Randolph people pick Canton and add a Saturday at Raynham when they want the bigger room.
Your first class
No experience needed, no equipment needed, no fitness test. You book a free intro appointment of about 15 minutes: a look around, how classes and membership work, and a conversation about what you want out of training. Wear shorts and a T-shirt. It ends with a short lesson on the mat, so you have been on the floor before the class starts.

Six and a half miles. That is closer than most people’s gym commute, and it is the whole reason this page exists.
