Norwood, MA: Eight Miles, Sixteen Minutes
Norwood is eight miles from the Canton gym, up Washington Street and over Route 1, and it is one of the few towns on this list where the drive is short enough that the schedule, not the map, is the thing to think about.
Eight miles, sixteen minutes
From Norwood Town Hall at 566 Washington Street it is 8.1 miles and about 16 minutes to Canton, up Washington Street, a short stretch of Route 1 and then Route 138. Raynham is 25.1 miles and roughly 39 minutes, which rules it out for a weekday. From Norwood High School the Canton figure is 9.2 miles and 19 minutes.
Clear-road numbers from OpenStreetMap routing. Washington Street is the spine of it, and the Route 1 stretch is the only part that ever backs up. The Route 1 stretch is the part that moves, and at 5 PM it does not move much.
Ellis Pond, and a town that keeps its water access
Norwood’s Conservation Commission owns and manages a set of conservation lands, and one of them is the Ellis Pond access off Nichols Street: a three acre site with a path, woods, wetlands and a gravel parking lot, set up so people can launch canoes and kayaks onto the pond. The commission also manages land along Purgatory Brook and the Fowl Meadow and Ponkapoag Bog area, which is a mouthful and also a real piece of protected habitat on the town’s edge.
What that means for a gym page is simple. Norwood is a town where people use the outdoors that is left, and the same families tend to want one indoor thing that runs all winter. This is that thing.
Wrestling at Norwood High
Norwood High School fields a wrestling team that competes in the Tri-Valley League, with practice in the NHS gym and post-season awards listed on the school’s athletics site. For a Norwood kid coming out of a season, jiu-jitsu is the continuation that does not require making weight: same balance and grips, more mat time, and a coach who can spend real time on one kid.
Norwood High’s wrestling practice runs in the NHS gym after school, which means the winter calendar in town already revolves around that building. Jiu-jitsu adds an evening option in a different building, ten minutes down Route 138.
What Canton runs
The week starts Monday with kickboxing at 6 PM and grappling at 7. Tuesday is jiu-jitsu at 6. Wednesday repeats Monday. Thursday repeats Tuesday. Saturday morning has grappling at 11 and open mat at noon. Adult classes run an hour.
Kids at Canton run Monday through Thursday in three bands: 3 to 5 at 5 PM, 6 to 9 at 5:30, 10 to 13 at 6:15. Ages, not sizes, and the times stack so a parent with two kids makes one trip.
What a Norwood week looks like
Tuesday and Thursday jiu-jitsu at 6 PM is the spine. Monday and Wednesday grappling at 7 PM is for people who prefer no-gi, and Saturday open mat at noon is the session that survives a bad week. If you work in Boston and get home at 6:30, the 7 PM classes are the ones that actually exist for you, and the Tuesday and Thursday kickboxing at 7 is the other option at that hour.
Norwood Recreation runs its own program guide out of 165 Nahatan Street, so the town’s calendar is crowded with youth sports and classes. Jiu-jitsu is the one that does not have a season and does not get cancelled for weather, which in February is the whole argument.
Two gyms, one membership
Canton is the weekday answer from Norwood and Raynham is the Saturday one, and the membership covers both. That is worth knowing before you pick, because the question people actually ask is not which gym is better, it is which one they will still be driving to in March. Sixteen minutes on a Tuesday is a different decision from 39 minutes, and the answer is obvious once you put the numbers next to each other.
The first visit
Everyone starts with the free intro. Fifteen minutes: a tour, how the classes and membership work, a conversation about what you want, and a short lesson on the mat. Bring shorts and a T-shirt.
If you are coming with a kid, say so on the form. The appointment can be booked for a time when that class is running.
How to start from Norwood
Send the form: program, location, phone. Somebody from the gym calls you back to book the intro. Canton 781-499-8302 or Raynham 508-219-0418.
The gym itself is at 420 Turnpike Street in Canton, just past the Stoughton line, so the last two miles are the same road you started on. Sixteen minutes and eight miles, most of it on roads you already drive. Norwood is closer to this gym than most of Boston is to its own, and that is the only fact on this page that should decide anything.
