Norton, MA: The Park, the Pool and the Reservoir
Norton is a town just south of Mansfield, and it has one of the better town parks in the region: nine acres of active recreation and another 27 acres of passive land with a trail loop, all anchored by the town pool.
Twelve miles up Route 24
From Norton Town Hall at 70 East Main Street it is 12.4 miles and about 18 minutes to Raynham, up Route 24 and off at Route 44. Canton is 17.1 miles and roughly 32 minutes. From Norton High School on West Main Street the figures are 13.8 miles and 22 minutes to Raynham, 18.5 miles and 36 minutes to Canton. Clear-road numbers, measured by OpenStreetMap routing, so add the usual at rush hour.
Raynham is the serving gym for Norton and it is not a hard call. Twelve miles up a highway you already use is a different commitment from a 30 minute cross-country drive.
Everett Leonard Park and the town pool
Everett Leonard Park is the center of Norton’s summer. Nine acres are set up for activities, 27 more are passive recreation with a trail loop, and the amenities include a softball and baseball field that is one of the home fields for Norton Youth Baseball Softball, plus the town pool. The pool opens in mid-June and runs through the end of August, weekdays consistently and weekends depending on whether the park is rented, because the whole park can be booked for parties, graduations and reunions.
That is the shape of a Norton summer: swim, ball, trails. The gap in the calendar is the winter, and that is where a mat is useful. Jiu-jitsu runs all year, indoors, and it is the one thing on a kid’s schedule that does not get rained out or closed for the season.
Wrestling at Norton High
Norton High School fields a wrestling team, and the program has its own schedule and roster on the school’s athletics site. For a Norton kid who has wrestled, jiu-jitsu is the closest thing to it that runs in the off season: the same comfort with grips and balance, more time on the mat, and no weight cut.
The reservoir on the town line
Norton Reservoir is one of the largest dammed water bodies in southeastern Massachusetts, more than 525 acres in Norton with another 25 in Mansfield according to the town’s own conservation inventory. It is the kind of local fact that comes up when somebody asks what is actually in Norton, and it is a decent answer: a big shallow reservoir, a lot of conservation land around it, and a town that has kept some space open.
What the Raynham room runs
Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Monday and Wednesday at 11 AM and 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and 7 PM, Saturday at 10 AM, Sunday at 10 AM. No-Gi Grappling: 10 AM most weekday mornings, 6 AM Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and evening classes through the week. Kickboxing: Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM, Friday at 5 PM, with Kickboxing Basics Monday and Tuesday at 7 PM. Women’s jiu-jitsu Sunday at 9 AM. Friday night marathon jiu-jitsu at 6 PM, Thursday night marathon no-gi at 6 PM, open mat Sunday at 8 and 11.
For a Norton schedule, the 6 PM and 7 PM classes are the practical ones. The 11 AM classes matter if you work nights, work from home, or are a shift worker at one of the plants along Route 24, which is a real Norton demographic.
What a Norton week looks like
Most Norton people land on two weeknights plus a Saturday. Tuesday and Thursday jiu-jitsu at 7 PM is the default pair, with Saturday at 10 AM as the one that does not depend on getting out of work on time. If you have a physical job, the Friday 6 PM marathon class is the one that resets the week, and it is a longer session than the weekday hour.
Kids, and the age bands
Tiny Ninjas is 3 to 5 and runs Monday through Thursday at 4:45 and 5:30 PM, Friday at 5 PM, Sunday at 9 AM. Vipers is 6 to 9, Monday through Thursday at 5 PM. Cobras is 10 to 13, Monday through Thursday at 6 PM. Friday at 5:30 and Sunday at 9:30 combine Vipers and Cobras.
The 4:45 and 5 PM starts are what makes this work for a Norton family: a kid gets out of school, gets home, and gets to class without the evening collapsing.
Your first class
No experience required. The way in is a free intro appointment, about 15 minutes: a look around, how classes and membership work, and a conversation about what you want. Bring shorts and a T-shirt. It ends with a short lesson on the mat.
If you are coming with a kid in the car, say so on the form and the appointment can be booked for a time when that class is running.
How to start from Norton
Use the form on this page: program, location, phone. Someone calls you back and puts you in a class that fits. Or call the Raynham gym on 508-219-0418. Canton is 781-499-8302 if you are already up that way for work.
Eighteen minutes up Route 24. That is the whole ask.
