Halifax, MA: One High School, One Mat
Halifax is a small town in Plymouth County with a lot of shoreline, a lot of youth sports, and one high school that serves three towns. It is also 16 miles from the Raynham gym, which makes it one of the easier drives on this side of the list.
The drive down Route 106
From Halifax Town Hall at 499 Plymouth Street it is 16.3 miles and about 26 minutes to Raynham, down Plymouth Street and across to Route 44. Canton is 22 miles and around 39 minutes, which is far enough that Raynham is the answer for almost everyone in Halifax. From Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston the drive to Raynham is 20 miles and about 33 minutes. Those numbers are clear-road measurements from OpenStreetMap routing, so a summer Friday on Route 106 is its own situation.
A town that runs its sports through volunteers
The Halifax Youth and Recreation Commission maintains the town’s athletic fields and runs programs like the after-school program and the dances. The youth baseball, basketball, football, cheerleading, hockey, soccer and softball programs are run by private associations, and the town’s role is scheduling fields and facilities for them. That is how a lot of small towns work, and it means the sports calendar in Halifax is built by parents who volunteer for it.
Which is the honest setup for a conversation about jiu-jitsu. If your kid plays three sports a year, this is not a replacement for any of them. It is the one activity that runs all winter, indoors, in a room where the coach knows every kid’s name.
Silver Lake, and what comes after it
Halifax students go to Silver Lake Regional High School in Kingston, along with students from Kingston and Plympton, under a three-town regional agreement. That makes the high school a shared institution rather than a Halifax one, and it means the youth sports pipeline in Halifax feeds a bigger school program two towns over.
For a family in that pipeline, the kids’ classes here are a useful bridge. Tiny Ninjas takes ages 3 to 5, Vipers takes 6 to 9, Cobras takes 10 to 13, and each band has its own class time rather than one big session with a wide age range. A ten-year-old is not standing in line with a five-year-old.
What the Raynham room runs
Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu runs Monday and Wednesday at 11 AM and 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and 7 PM, Saturday at 10 AM and Sunday at 10 AM. No-Gi Grappling fills the mornings, 10 AM most weekdays plus 6 AM on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with evening classes through the week. Kickboxing runs Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and Friday at 5 PM. Women’s jiu-jitsu is Sunday at 9 AM, and there is open mat Sunday at 8 and 11.
The 6 and 7 PM jiu-jitsu classes are the ones that work for most Halifax people, because the drive home from work is already pointed that way. Raynham is the main gym of the two and has been on Route 44 since early 2021, so the room is big enough to have a beginners’ corner and a competition corner at the same time.
What a Halifax week looks like
The honest version: one weeknight and one weekend session is what most parents manage, and the Friday 5:30 combined Vipers and Cobras class plus the Sunday 9:30 session are built for exactly that. Pick one weekday, add Saturday morning if the week allows, and the drive stops feeling like a drive.
Halifax also has Burrage Pond on its side of town, a state wildlife area with trails and water, which is where a lot of local families already spend their weekends. The gym is the indoor half of the same instinct.
Adults: three ways in
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the grappling core and the usual starting point. Kickboxing is stand-up striking and the hardest hour in the building. No-Gi Grappling is the grappling without the jacket, faster and sweatier. All three are open to complete beginners, and adult classes run an hour.
The first class, honestly
You do not need experience, equipment or a level of fitness. The way in is a free intro appointment, about 15 minutes: a tour, how classes and membership work, and a conversation about what you are actually after. Bring shorts and a T-shirt. It ends with a short lesson on the mat so you have been on the floor before the class starts.
For a parent, the useful part is that the appointment can be booked while the kids’ class is running, so you see the actual room instead of a description of it. Say on the form that you are coming with a child.
