Dedham, MA: State Champions on the Mat
Dedham is seven miles from the Canton gym, and it is home to the reigning MIAA Division 3 state champion in mixed-gender wrestling, which is the sort of fact that makes a town page easy to write.
Seven miles up Route 1 and Route 138
From Dedham Town Hall at 450 Washington Street it is 7.9 miles and about 14 minutes to Canton, out Eastern Avenue to Route 1 and then down Route 138. Raynham is 29.1 miles and roughly 38 minutes, so it is not a weekday option. From Dedham High School on Whiting Avenue the Canton figure is 7.6 miles and 15 minutes.
Clear-road numbers from OpenStreetMap routing. Eastern Avenue to Route 1 is the start, and Route 138 down through Canton is the rest of it. Route 1 is the variable, and anyone who has driven it at 4:30 on a Friday knows what that means.
State champions on the mat
Dedham High School won the 2026 MIAA Division 3 mixed-gender wrestling championship, confirmed on the MIAA’s own championship report. That is a school program with a real ceiling, and it means there are Dedham kids who have already spent years on a mat by the time they finish high school.
Kids at Canton: Tiny Ninjas (3 to 5) at 5 PM, Vipers (6 to 9) at 5:30, Cobras (10 to 13) at 6:15, Monday through Thursday. One trip can cover two siblings.
The river town
Dedham is a Charles River town, and the town’s own open space material describes the river running 80 miles from Hopkinton through 22 cities and towns before it empties into Boston Harbor. The town also has Wigwam Pond, with a watershed management plan and an access and recreation plan, and a conservation division that handles wetlands permitting and runs things like Dedham Biodiversity Day.
Dedham’s Parks and Recreation Department runs its own program guide and field permits, so the town calendar is full before the school year even starts. That is a town with a real relationship to its water and its open land, which is a decent thing to know when you are deciding where your family spends its indoor hours. The mat is the winter half of an outdoorsy town’s year.
Wigwam Pond has its own watershed management plan and an access and recreation plan, and the town runs a Biodiversity Day through its conservation division. Dedham takes its water seriously, which is a polite way of saying people there spend time outside.
What Canton runs for adults
Kickboxing runs four nights: Monday and Wednesday at 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday at 7. Jiu-jitsu is Tuesday and Thursday at 6 PM. Grappling, the no-gi class, is Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM and Saturday at 11 AM. Open mat Saturday at noon.
Adult classes run an hour. Canton is a smaller room than Raynham, so the classes are less crowded and the coaching is closer, and the trade is a shorter menu: four weeknight slots plus Saturday.
What a Dedham week looks like
Tuesday and Thursday jiu-jitsu at 6 PM is the spine, Monday and Wednesday grappling at 7 PM is the alternative, and Saturday open mat at noon is the session that does not care how your week went. If you commute into Boston, the 7 PM starts are the realistic ones, and the Dedham commute puts you back in town in time for them on most days.
If you want a bigger schedule, Raynham has 11 AM classes, morning no-gi, a women’s class Sunday at 9, and marathon sessions Thursday and Friday nights. At 38 minutes from Dedham it is a weekend trip, not a habit, but the membership covers it.
What the room is actually like
Canton is a small room with a big mat and a schedule that runs on evenings. On a Tuesday at 6 there might be a dozen people, a mix of white belts and people who have been training for years, and a coach who can see everybody at once. That is the trade for a shorter menu: you get more attention per person, and nobody spends the hour standing in a line waiting for a turn.
Your first class
No experience, no equipment, no fitness test. Book the free intro, about 15 minutes, and you get the tour, the membership explanation, and a short lesson on the mat. Wear shorts and a T-shirt.
If you are coming with a kid who wrestles, say so on the form. The intro can be booked for a time when the class you are asking about is actually running.
How to start from Dedham
Use the form: pick a program, pick a gym, leave a number. The gym calls you back to book the intro. Canton 781-499-8302, Raynham 508-219-0418.
About fourteen minutes, one river town, a state champion wrestling program and a mat that runs all year. That is the offer, and it is a better one than most pages on this site can make.
