Foxborough, MA: Two Gyms, Four Minutes Apart
Foxborough is a town of two halves: the stadium side that everybody in New England knows, and the woods side that people who live there know better. More than 2,000 acres of the town are permanently protected open space, including roughly 700 acres of F. Gilbert Hills State Forest.
Both gyms, four minutes apart
Foxborough is the one town on this list where the choice between gyms is genuinely close. From Foxborough Town Hall on South Street it is 13.2 miles and about 23 minutes to Canton, down through Sharon and onto Route 138, and 19.6 miles and about 27 minutes to Raynham, down Route 24 and off at Route 44. From Foxborough High School the numbers are 13.9 miles and 26 minutes to Canton, 19.8 miles and 29 minutes to Raynham.
Clear-road figures from OpenStreetMap routing. Canton is six and a half miles shorter and about four minutes faster, which is close enough that the decision should be about the schedule you can actually keep, not the map.
The state forest on the town line
F. Gilbert Hills State Forest accounts for roughly 700 of those protected acres, and the town’s conservation guide covers more than 2,000 acres of permanently protected land across Foxborough. There is a trail network through it, and the town’s conservation land includes the Canoe River Wilderness Area north of Willow Street with paths that look over Greeley’s Pond.
A town with that much trail in it tends to have families who are already outside on the weekend. The gym is the indoor version of the same habit, and the crossover is real: kids who hike and ride tend to like a room where the work is physical and the rules are clear.
Foxborough High hosted the state tournament
Foxborough High School hosted the MIAA Division 3 state wrestling championships in February 2025, which is not a small thing for a school program and says something about the size of the room and the state of the sport in town. For a Foxborough kid who wrestles, this is the off-season answer: same balance and grips, more mat time, no weight cut, and a coach who can spend time on one kid instead of fifteen.
The kids’ schedule at Canton
The three bands stack Monday through Thursday: Tiny Ninjas, 3 to 5, at 5 PM; Vipers, 6 to 9, at 5:30; Cobras, 10 to 13, at 6:15. A family with two kids in two age groups still makes one trip.
If the drive is easier on the Raynham side on a given night, Raynham runs Tiny Ninjas Monday through Thursday at 4:45 and 5:30 PM, Friday at 5 PM and Sunday at 9 AM, Vipers Monday through Thursday at 5 PM, Cobras Monday through Thursday at 6 PM, and a combined Vipers and Cobras class Friday at 5:30 and Sunday at 9:30. Two gyms, one membership, and you can use whichever one your week allows.
What Canton runs for adults
Jiu-jitsu takes Tuesday and Thursday at 6 PM. The no-gi class, called Grappling on the schedule, is Monday and Wednesday at 7 PM with a Saturday 11 AM session. Kickboxing fills the early slots, 6 PM Monday and Wednesday, 7 PM Tuesday and Thursday. Saturday noon is open mat. Every adult class runs an hour.
Raynham’s adult menu is bigger: jiu-jitsu at 11 AM and 6 or 7 PM on weekdays plus Saturday and Sunday at 10 AM, no-gi at 10 AM most mornings and 6 AM three days a week, kickboxing Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and Friday at 5 PM, women’s jiu-jitsu Sunday at 9 AM, and marathon classes Friday and Thursday nights.
Two rooms, one membership
The practical version of the two-gym choice: Canton on a Tuesday and Thursday for jiu-jitsu at 6 PM, Raynham on a Saturday morning at 10 for the bigger class, or Raynham on a Friday at 5 for kickboxing if that is the program you want. Memberships cover both gyms, so the decision is not permanent and it does not need to be made on a map.
That flexibility is worth more in Foxborough than in most towns, because the two drives are close enough that a change in shift or school pickup can flip the answer without changing the gym.
Where to start
The first step is free and takes a quarter of an hour: a look around, how membership and classes work, and a short lesson on the mat. Shorts and a T-shirt are the only kit you need.
Pick the gym you will actually drive to on a Wednesday in February. That is the only question that matters, and both answers here are under 30 minutes.
