Mansfield, MA: Wrestling Town, Twenty Minutes Out
Mansfield sits a few minutes off Route 95 with a commuter rail station in the middle of town, which is why a lot of people know the place without ever leaving the highway. It is also one of the few towns on this list where the drive to either gym is close enough that the answer depends on your week rather than on the map.
Two gyms, four minutes apart
From Mansfield Town Hall on Park Row it is 15.9 miles and about 22 minutes to Raynham, mostly down Route 24 to the Route 44 exit, and 18.7 miles and about 27 minutes to Canton. From Mansfield High School on East Street the gap narrows: 16.8 miles and 25 minutes to Raynham, 19.4 miles and 30 minutes to Canton. Those are clear-road figures from OpenStreetMap routing. At 5:30 on a weekday, Route 24 south out of Mansfield is the variable, and anyone who commutes that road already knows it.
So: Raynham is the shorter drive and the bigger room. Canton is the second option if your day already puts you up Route 95. Neither is far enough to be a reason not to train.
The train, and why the evening classes matter
Mansfield’s commuter rail station is on Crocker Street in the center of town, on the Providence/Stoughton line, which is the reason a lot of Mansfield households run on a Boston schedule. If your day ends at South Station and then on a train, the 6 and 7 PM classes at Raynham are the ones that survive contact with your week, and the 11 AM classes are the ones for the days you are not commuting.
The wrestling town
Mansfield High School fields a wrestling team, and the town has been producing wrestlers for long enough that the sport is part of the local sports vocabulary rather than a niche. For a kid who has done a season of youth wrestling, jiu-jitsu is the natural next room: same body awareness, same comfort with being on the ground, less time spent making weight.
That is most of the reason a Mansfield family ends up here. The kids’ classes are split by age, not by size or experience, so a seven-year-old with a wrestling season behind them and a seven-year-old who has never been on a mat start in the same place, which is the point.
Ponds, trails, and a town that gets outside
Mansfield’s conservation department runs a Trail Steward program with volunteers walking the major conservation areas and reporting what needs fixing, and the trail systems on that list include Sweets Pond off Otis Street and Mill Pond off East Street. It is a small thing, but it tells you what the town values. If your family already spends Sundays on those trails, a gym that gets you on the mat three nights a week is not a strange addition to the routine.
What Raynham runs
Raynham is the main gym and the one most Mansfield people end up at. Adult Brazilian Jiu Jitsu runs Monday and Wednesday at 11 AM and 6 PM, Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and 7 PM, Saturday at 10 AM and Sunday at 10 AM. If you work a normal day, the 6 and 7 PM classes are your week. If your schedule is not normal, the 11 AM classes are there and they are not a beginner’s afterthought.
No-Gi Grappling runs most mornings at 10 AM and several evenings, with a 6 AM class on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday for people who want the day done before it starts. Kickboxing runs Tuesday and Thursday at 11 AM and Friday at 5 PM, with Kickboxing Basics Monday and Tuesday at 7 PM. There is a Friday night marathon jiu-jitsu class at 6 PM and a Thursday night marathon no-gi at 6 PM. Women’s jiu-jitsu is Sunday at 9 AM.
Kids, by age
Tiny Ninjas, ages 3 to 5, runs Monday through Thursday at 4:45 and 5:30 PM, Friday at 5 PM and Sunday at 9 AM. Vipers, ages 6 to 9, runs Monday through Thursday at 5 PM. Cobras, ages 10 to 13, runs Monday through Thursday at 6 PM. Friday at 5:30 and Sunday at 9:30 combine Vipers and Cobras into one session for families who cannot do four weeknights.
The first visit is not a tryout
No experience needed. The way in is a free intro appointment of about 15 minutes: a tour, how the classes and the membership work, and a talk about what you want out of it. Wear shorts and a T-shirt. It finishes with a short lesson on the mat, so you are not walking into your first class cold.
If you are bringing a kid, say so on the form. The appointment can be booked for a time when the class you are asking about is actually running, which is worth more than any description of it.
How to start from Mansfield
Use the form on this page: program, location, phone number. Someone from the gym calls you back and puts you in a class that fits around work or school. Rather call? Raynham is 508-219-0418 and Canton is 781-499-8302.
Fifteen miles down Route 24 is not a commute. It is the difference between talking about training and doing it.
