What Do Kids Learn in BJJ Classes?
This week in our kids classes we’re working on two things: holding mount (using “Airplane Arms”) and the cross collar choke from mount.
For parents who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the mount is when one student is sitting across their partner’s torso. It’s considered a strong position because it allows the top person to control movement and set up attacks.
Before we even worry about submissions, we focus on holding the position correctly.
One of the ways we teach that is with something we call “Airplane Arms.” Kids stretch their arms out wide like airplane wings while they hold the mount position. It’s simple, but it helps them learn balance and pressure so they don’t get rolled over when their partner tries to escape.
Once they understand how to stay balanced and control the position, we build from there and show the cross collar choke. This is a classic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technique that uses the gi collar to create a controlled submission.
The big takeaway for the kids is learning patience and control. If they rush the submission, they usually lose the position. If they slow down and control first, everything works a lot better.
That idea ties in well with our Lauzon Life Lesson of the Week:
-
Plan Ahead & Build Systems
-
Don’t just set goals—create systems that make success inevitable.
In class, that system might look like: get mount → hold the position → set your grips → apply the choke.
Learning to follow a process like that helps kids stay calm, think ahead, and make better decisions when things get chaotic.

Across the academy, kids are learning these same kinds of lessons whether they’re getting their first exposure to grappling in Tiny Ninjas BJJ for kids ages 3–5, building confidence and coordination in Vipers BJJ for kids ages 6–9, or sharpening their technique and leadership in Cobras BJJ for kids ages 10–13.

We’re going to be starting monthly in-house seminars at the academy.
The first one will be Friday, March 13th at 6 PM with Joe Lauzon at our Raynham Location, and it will be free for all Lauzon MMA members. These seminars are a chance to spend a little extra time digging into technique, asking questions, and working through details we don’t always get to during regular class.
Stop by the front desk if you’d like more details.
We’re also excited to introduce a new women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class on Sundays at 11 AM. This class is great for all experience levels and is a great opportunity for women to train, learn, and work with other women in the sport in a supportive environment. It’s part of our regular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training program and open to anyone looking to get started or continue building their skills.

Looking ahead:
-
No classes on Sunday, April 5th for Easter Sunday.
-
Canton Grand Opening Celebration — Monday, May 25th.
We’re planning marathon grappling, a cookout, and more, so mark your calendars. More details will be coming soon.
If you’ve been curious about training, you’re always welcome to stop by the academy and see what a class is like. Schedule a class or swing in for a visit—and if you’ve had a great experience at Lauzon MMA, we’d really appreciate you sharing it with a quick review.
