The Right Way to Roll: Learning from Every Encounter in BJJ
When you first step onto the mats to start training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, it’s essential to understand that not every roll is a matter of life or death. We’re here to practice, to learn, and to improve. As a black belt with over two decades of experience, I’ve been submitted more times than I can count, sometimes by practitioners in their first or second year. Why? Because I allow myself to be put in challenging positions to learn and grow.
Practice, Not Perfection
The journey in BJJ is about embracing the learning process, not just tallying up wins. Even as a seasoned practitioner, I make it a point to expose myself to vulnerabilities on the mat. This approach isn’t about seeking defeat; it’s about understanding and overcoming weaknesses.
Setting Objectives for Growth
Every roll should have a purpose beyond winning. Whether it’s perfecting your arm drags, mastering Omaplatas, or any other technique, the goal is improvement. Start practicing new moves with less experienced or smaller partners, gradually working your way up as your skills improve. This strategy isn’t about seeking easy victories but about gradually challenging yourself more as you progress.
Winning Isn’t Everything
Focusing solely on winning every roll can actually hinder your growth in BJJ. Instead, be intentional with your practice. Work on areas that need improvement, and view each training session as an opportunity to learn something new, not just to dominate.
Making the Most of Your Training
To truly excel in BJJ, it’s crucial to shift your mindset from winning every encounter to learning from each one. Use your time on the mats efficiently by focusing on development and understanding that submissions, whether giving or receiving them, are all part of the learning process.
