Summer Camp at Lauzon MMA: Training the Mind and Body
Every summer at Lauzon MMA, our full-day kids’ summer camps are packed with energy — think games, technique, lots of rolling, and plenty of laughs. It’s a week where kids come home tired, happy, and just a little tougher than they were before.
This year, we’re adding something new I’m really excited about: a simple mindset project built around a few great kids’ books. No lectures, no homework — just a fun, low-pressure way to connect what they’re learning on the mats with lessons that stick for life.
Building Grit Off the Mats
A while back, I started reading the Way of the Warrior Kid series by Jocko Willink with my older son, Joey. If you don’t know the books, they’re written for kids — quick reads, super relatable, and packed with the same values we teach every day at the Academy: discipline, ownership, effort, and doing what’s right even when it’s hard.
We tore through the first book. Then the second. Then the third. I haven’t gone through them yet with my younger son, Jake, so I figured this summer would be the perfect time to dive back in… and this time, we’re doing it with all the kids at camp.
How It’ll Work
We’re running three full-day camp weeks this summer. Each week will feature one of the Jocko books:
- Week 2: Campers get Book 1
- Week 4: Campers get Book 2
- Week 6: Campers get Book 3
Each book goes home with your child at the end of the week — it’s theirs to keep. During the week, we’ll read a little bit together each day. Nothing heavy. Just a few pages, followed by some real conversations about effort, courage, and how these stories apply to the challenges we’re already tackling in training.
Don’t worry if your child is only signed up for one week — the books don’t need to be read in order. Each one stands on its own, and the values come through clearly no matter where we start.
Why We’re Doing It
Summer should be fun — 100%. But let’s be honest… it’s also easy for kids to slip into full “Fortnite mode” for three months straight. We wanted to find a way to keep their minds engaged without making camp feel like school.
These books hit the sweet spot. They’re fun, easy to follow, and help reinforce the exact same mindset we’re building in class. Whether your kid is learning to shrimp out of side control or deal with a tricky situation at home, the lessons translate.
And this is the stuff that lasts. This is the stuff that builds character.
The Bigger Picture
Whether your child is training with our Tiny Ninjas BJJ, Vipers BJJ, or Cobras BJJ programs, we’re always thinking about how to help them grow — not just as athletes, but as people.
This new addition to camp is just another way we’re making sure Lauzon MMA is more than just a place to burn energy. It’s where kids build confidence, make great friends, and learn to take ownership of their choices.
